Overview
Seven days in a winter that only exists in the north
A winter that only exists in the north
Northeast China in winter is not a milder version of the rest of the country — it is a different place entirely. Rivers freeze solid, wooden cottages disappear under snow, and hot springs steam beside volcanic peaks. This seven-day journey takes a small group through four stops: three nights in Harbin, one night in Snow Town, a day around Jingpo Lake, and two nights in the Changbai Mountain area.
Who this journey suits
It suits travellers who want the northern winter without having to solve its logistics: private vehicles between stops, an English-speaking guide for five of the seven days, six nights of accommodation with breakfast, and six meals chosen for the region. It is not a physical challenge — most days are paced around sightseeing and short walks, and the order of visits can be adjusted when winter weather asks for it.
Four moments worth the cold

Ice and Snow World after dark
Whole buildings cut from river ice, lit from inside. We go after sunset, when the structures actually read.

A night under the snow roofs
One night inside Snow Town, after the day visitors leave — the reason we stay over rather than pass through.

A frozen lake that still works
Winter fishing traditions on Jingpo Lake, plus the falls that keep running under the ice.

Changbai under snow
Changbai's volcanic slopes under deep snow: Heavenly Lake when it opens, seen from the rim above the frozen crater.
The shape of the route
About 900 km end to end, driven in four legs. Tap a stop to see it on the map.

Itinerary
The journey, day by day
Day 1 — Harbin · Welcome to the Ice City
Private airport pick-up and transfer to your hotel. Rest and adjust to the cold, or take a short walk nearby if you arrive early.
Why it sits here: arrival day is deliberately empty — winter flights into Harbin are often delayed, and nothing on day one is worth missing.
Day 2 — Harbin · Markets, Wildlife and Ice Lights
Visit Hongzhuan Street market, see tigers from a park vehicle, and explore Harbin Polarland. In the evening, watch the Ice and Snow World light up.
Why it sits here: three low-effort stops in the city before the cold gets serious.
Day 3 — Harbin · European Heritage and Ice Fun
Explore snowy Volga Manor, ice activities on the Songhua River, the Giant Snowman, Central Street, Saint Sophia Square and the Chinese Baroque Quarter.
Why it sits here: the last warm-base day — every stop is within minutes of the hotel if the temperature drops.
Day 4 — Harbin → Snow Town · Lantern-lit Winter
Travel through snowy forest to Xueyun Street. Reindeer encounters, dog sledding, an iron-pot stew dinner, and lantern-lit rooftops after dark.
Why it sits here: the hardest drive of the week, placed after three acclimatised nights.
Day 5 — Snow Town → Jingpo Lake → Changbai · Winter Traditions
Visit Jingpo Lake for winter fishing traditions (subject to local schedule) and a lake-fish lunch, then continue to the Changbai area.
Why it sits here: it breaks the long Snow Town → Changbai drive into two reasonable halves.
Day 6 — Changbai · Volcanic Peaks and Snowy Landscapes
Take park transport into the North Scenic Area. See Heavenly Lake when it is open, plus Changbai Waterfall, Julong Hot Springs and Luyuan Pool as conditions allow.
Why it sits here: the one genuinely weather-dependent day — it sits last so we can swap it with day five if the mountain closes.
Day 7 — Changbai · Departure
After breakfast, a private transfer to the agreed Changbaishan airport or station, timed to your flight or train.
Why it sits here: flying out of Changbai instead of returning to Harbin saves a full day of driving.
Winter note: snow and road conditions may affect travel, and winter fishing, bonfires and Heavenly Lake access depend on local operations and weather. Your guide will adjust the order of visits if conditions require it.

Accommodation
Four-diamond comfort, deep in the snow
After a full day out in the ice and snow, the last thing you want is a cold room. On this journey you sleep six nights in hand-picked four-diamond hotels and signature snow-town stays — three nights in Harbin, one night inside Snow Town itself, and two nights near Changbai Mountain. Every property is chosen for comfort, location and heating you can actually feel, because in a northeast winter, the hotel is part of the experience.

3 Nights · Harbin
City-centre comfort near Central Street — warm rooms, solid breakfasts, and the ice city right outside your door.

1 Night · China Snow Town
The night most visitors remember most. You stay inside the village itself — wake up to snow-laden rooftops and red lanterns outside your window.

2 Nights · Changbai Mountain area
A calm base for Jingpo Lake and the mountain days — roomy, quiet, and minutes from the slopes.
The hotels above are our preferred properties. The actual hotel and room type for your departure will be confirmed at booking, based on travel dates and availability — always at the same four-diamond standard.
